“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” - Ephesians 6:12-13
Writer Joe Michael Straczynski adapted this verse to finish off one of his seasons of Babylon 5. The words greatly appeal to stoics. It is worth considering when watching tv and adverts assure you it is ok to lust after wealthy strangers. Everyone faces opposition in their lives, including the blessed. And we need the reminder that our struggle is not really with the person we happen to be facing. It matters little who is treasurer if the Prime Minister has no will to make important decisions.
And those decision makers may not be individuals at all. It might be policy or custom. Family planning abortion clinics sourcing body parts may not be the idea of one person, but of skewed good intentions. So that the desire to not kill women from poor health care, one ends up killing babies to allow bad lifestyle choices. And the Devil laughs as good people bicker.
The armour of God is his Word. We are not supposed to fight the Devil, but resist it. God has won the battle already. Don’t join with the losers. Stand on the rock God has given you. Be loving and compassionate. Find wisdom in the Word.
